PURPOSE: After cemented total hip arthroplasty, the risk of periprosthetic fracture (PPF) of taper-slip stems is higher than that of composite-beam stems. We aimed to assess the conditions resulting in PPFs of taper-slip stems using a falling weight. METHODS: Taper-slip stems were fixed to five types of simulated bone models using bone cement, and the fractures were evaluated by dropping stainless-steel weights from a predetermined height onto the heads. The periprosthetic fracture height in 50% of the bone models (PPFH50) was calculated using the staircase method. RESULTS: For the fixation with 0° of flexion, the values for PPFH50 were 61 ± 11, 60 ± 13, above 110, 108 ± 49, and 78 ± 12 cm for the cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy, stainless steel alloy (SUS), titanium alloy (Ti), smooth surface, and thick cement mantle models, respectively; for the fixation with 10° of flexion (considering flexure), the PPFH50 values were 77 ± 5, 85 ± 9, 90 ± 2, 89 ± 5, and 81 ± 11 cm, respectively. The fracture rates of the polished-surface stems were 78.6 and 35.7% at the proximal and distal sites, respectively (p < 0.05); the fracture rates of the smooth-surface stems were 14.2 and 100%, respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The impact tests demonstrated that the conditions that were less likely to cause PPFs were use of Ti, a smooth surface, a thick cement mantle, and probably, use of SUS.

Co3V2O8features spin-3/2 moments arrayed on a kagome staircase lattice. A spin density wave with a continuously evolving propagation vector ofk⃗=(0,δ,0), showing both incommensurate states and multiple commensurate lock-ins, is observed at temperatures above the ferromagnetic ground state. Previous work has suggested that this changing propagation vector could be driven by changes in exchange interactions due to Co atom displacements. We present a straightforward model showing that a Hamiltonian with competing (but temperature independent) interactions can semi-quantitatively reproduce this behavior using a mean field approximation. The simulated spin density wave magnetic structures feature buckled kagome planes that are either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically ordered. Propagation vectors that differ fromδ=1/2will have multiple different ways of arranging these ferromagnetic layers that have very similar energies. This classical stacking entropy appears to be crucial in stabilizing the temperature-dependent propagation vector.

BACKGROUND: The standard imaging technique for the diagnosis of intestinal malrotation remains the upper gastro-intestinal series (UGIS). The lateral view is promoted as important for making a diagnosis. For this, the lateral view should be of adequate quality, and radiologists must know the normal appearance as well as the appearance of duodenal variants, as misdiagnosis may lead to unnecessary surgery. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the quality, findings including the prevalence of the "descending staircase" configuration and its correspondence to a diagnosis of duodenum redundum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study and was conducted in a large tertiary children's hospital in the United States. A retrospective review of UGI fluoroscopy exams in children aged ≤ 18 years between January and December 2018 was performed by a pediatric radiologist. First, the lateral view images/cine-loops were assessed independently, followed by the anteroposterior (AP) view. The studies which were designated to have an adequate lateral view were evaluated for configuration of the duodenum and recorded as: normal, abnormal, or normal variant. Also, the presence of a descending staircase configuration was correlated with an AP view for a diagnosis of duodenum redundum. RESULTS: A total of 26 children (26%) (males:16; females:10) with age range 0 to 16 years had adequate lateral views during UGI exams for inclusion. Of the 26, 18 (69%) were reported as normal, 7 (27%) were reported as having a descending staircase and 1 (4%) was reported as abnormal. The AP view demonstrated 2 abnormal studies (1 malrotation and 1 non-rotation), 6 duodenum redundum and 18 normal exams. The one abnormal lateral duodenum was confirmed as a non-rotation on AP view; the second patient with an abnormal AP view had a normal appearance on the lateral view. CONCLUSIONS: A total of 26% of UGI studies had adequate lateral views for interpretation. Of these, nearly a quarter (23%) demonstrated the descending stair-case sign corresponding to a diagnosis of duodenum redundum on the AP view. If the lateral view had been used alone, there would have been a missed diagnosis in one patient.

There is a growing interest in performing playback experiments to understand which acoustical cues trigger specific behavioral/emotional responses in dogs. However, very limited studies have focused their attention on more basic aspects of hearing such as sensitivity, i.e., the identification of minimal intensity thresholds across different frequencies. Most previous studies relied on electrophysiological methods for audiograms for dogs, but these methods are considered less accurate than assessments based on behavioral responses. To our knowledge, only one study has established hearing thresholds using a behavioral assessment on four dogs but using a method that did not allow potential improvement throughout the sessions. In the present study, we devised an assessment procedure based on a staircase method. Implying the adaptation of the assessed intensity on the dogs' performance, this approach grants several assessments around the actual hearing threshold of the animal, thereby increasing the reliability of the result. We used such a method to determine hearing thresholds at three frequencies (0.5, 4.0, and 20.0 kHz). Five dogs were tested in each frequency. The hearing thresholds were found to be 19.5 ± 2.8 dB SPL at 0.5 kHz, 14.0 ± 4.5 dB SPL at 4.0 kHz, and 8.5 ± 12.8 dB SPL at 20.0 kHz. No improvement in performance was visible across the procedure. While the thresholds at 0.5 and 4.0 kHz were in line with the previous literature, the threshold at 20 kHz was remarkably lower than expected. Dogs' ability to produce vocalization beyond 20 kHz, potentially used in short-range communication, and the selective pressure linked to intraspecific communication in social canids are discussed as potential explanations for the sensitivity to higher frequencies.

A staircase-shaped quasi-fractal antenna is presented to meet the requirements of compact electronics operating in UWB or E-UWB spectrum. A conventional broadband monopole antenna is converted into UWB antenna utilizing three iterations of fractal patches. The resultant antenna offers wide impedance bandwidth ranges 2.3-17.8 GHz, having a notch band at 6.1-7.2 GHz. Afterwards, a two-port MIMO antenna is created by placing the second element orthogonally with an edge-to-edge distance of 8.5 mm, that is λ/15 where λ corresponds to free space wavelength at the lowest cut-off frequency. Hereafter, a meandered line-shaped stub is inserted to reduce the mutual coupling between closely spaced MIMO elements to less than -25 dB. As the intended application of the proposed work is On-body, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) analyses are carried out at 2.4, 5.8 and 8 GHz, showing an acceptable range for both 1-g and 10-g averaged tissues standards. Moreover, various parameters of the MIMO antenna are studied, and a comparison is made between simulated and measured results as well as those of the state of the art.

The stop-signal task is widely used in experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience research, as well as neuropsychological and clinical practice for assessing response inhibition. The task requires participants to make speeded responses on a majority of trials, but to inhibit responses when a stop signal appears after the imperative cue. The stop-signal delay after the onset of the imperative cue determines how difficult it is to cancel an initiated action. The delay is typically staircased to maintain a 50% stopping accuracy for an estimation of stopping speed to be calculated. However, the validity of this estimation is compromised when participants engage in strategic slowing, motivated by a desire to avoid stopping failures. We hypothesized that maintaining stopping accuracy at 66.67% reduces this bias, and that slowing may also be impacted by the level of experimenter supervision. We found that compared with 50%, using a 66.67% stopping accuracy staircase produced slower stop-signal reaction time estimations (≈7 ms), but resulted in fewer strategic slowing exclusions. Additionally, both staircase procedures had similar within-experiment test-retest reliability. We also found that while individual and group testing in a laboratory setting produced similar estimations of stopping speed, participants tested online produced slower estimates. Our findings indicate that maintaining stopping accuracy at 66.67% is a reliable method for estimating stopping speed and can have benefits over the standard 50% staircase procedure. Further, our results show that care should be taken when comparing between experiments using different staircases or conducted in different testing environments.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the flexural strength and fatigue behavior of a novel 3D-printed composite resin for definitive restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty disc-shaped specimens were manufactured from each of a nanohybrid composite resin (NHC), polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN), and 3D-printed composite resin (3D) with CAD-CAM technology. Biaxial flexural strength (σin ) (n = 30 per group) and biaxial flexural fatigue strength (σff ) (n = 20 per group) were measured using piston-on-three-balls method, employing a staircase approach of 105 cycles. Weibull statistics, relative-strength degradation calculations, and fractography were performed. The results were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Significant differences in σin and σff among the groups (p < 0.001) were detected. The NHC group provided the highest mean ± standard deviation σin and σff (237.3 ± 31.6 MPa and 141.3 ± 3.8 MPa), followed by the PICN (140.3 ± 12.9 MPa and 73.5 ± 9.9 MPa) and the 3D (83.6 ± 18.5 MPa and 37.4 ± 23.8 MPa) groups. The 3D group exhibited significantly lower Weibull modulus (m = 4.7) and up to 15% higher relative strength degradation with areas of nonhomogeneous microstructure as possible fracture origins. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D-printed composite resin exhibited the lowest mechanical properties, where areas of nonhomogeneous microstructure developed during the mixing procedure served as potential fracture origins. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The clinical indications of the investigated novel 3D-printed composite resin should be limited to long-term provisional restorations. A cautious procedure for mixing the components is crucial before the 3D-printing process, since nonhomogeneous areas developed during the mixing could act as fracture origins.

Many neurons of the mammalian master circadian oscillator in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) respond to light pulses with irradiance-dependent changes in firing. Here, we set out to better understand this irradiance coding ability by considering how the SCN tracks more continuous changes in irradiance at both population and single unit level. To this end, we recorded extracellular activity in the SCN of anaesthetised mice presented with up + down irradiance staircase stimuli covering moonlight to daylight conditions and incorporating epochs with steady light or superimposed higher frequency modulations (temporal white noise (WN) and frequency/contrast chirps). Single unit activity was extracted by spike sorting. The population response of SCN units to this stimulus was a progressive increase in firing rate at higher irradiances. This relationship was symmetrical for up vs. down phases of the ramp in the presence of white noise or chirps but exhibited hysteresis for steady light, with firing systematically higher during increasing irradiance. Single units also showed a monotonic relationship between firing and irradiance but exhibited diversity not only in response polarity (increases vs. decreases in firing), but also in the sensitivity (EC50 ) and slope of fitted functions. These data show that individual SCN neurons exhibit monotonic relationships between irradiance and firing rate but differ in the irradiance range over which they respond. This property may help the SCN to encode the large differences in irradiance found in nature using neurons with a constrained range of firing rates. KEY POINTS: Daily changes in environmental light (irradiance) entrain the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) circadian clock. The mouse SCN shows graded increases in neurophysiological activity with light pulses of increasing irradiance. We show that this monotonic relationship between firing rate and irradiance is retained at population and single unit level when probed with more naturalistic staircase increases and decreases in irradiance. The irradiance response is more reliable in the presence of ongoing higher temporal frequency modulations in light intensity than under steady light. Single units varied in sensitivity allowing the population to cover a wide range of irradiances. Irradiance coding in the SCN has characteristics of a sparse code with individual neurons tracking different portions of the natural irradiance range. This property may address the challenge of encoding a 109 -fold day:night difference in irradiance within the constrained range of firing rates available to individual neurons.

Mental rotation tasks have been widely used to assess individuals' spatial cognition and the ability to mentally manipulate objects. This study employed a computerized adaptive training method to investigate the behavioral performance of participants of different genders in mental rotation tasks with different rotation angles before and after training. A total of 44 Chinese university students participated in the experiment, with the experimental group undergoing a five-day mental rotation training program. During the training phase, a three-down/one-up staircase procedure was used to adjust the stimulus levels (response time) based on participants' responses. The results showed that the training had a facilitative effect on the mental rotation ability of both male and female participants, and it was able to eliminate the gender differences in mental rotation performance. Regarding the angles, we observed that the improvement in the angles involved in the training was significantly higher compared to untrained angles. However, no significant differences in improvement were found among the three trained angles. In summary, these findings demonstrate the effectiveness of computerized adaptive training methods in improving mental rotation ability and highlight the influence of gender and angles on learning outcomes.

In the conventional multilevel inverters, occurrence of a fault in one or more power switches can cause abnormal changes in the output waveforms. Besides, increasing the applied power switches results to an increase in the possibility of fault on the power switches. Accordingly, providing a comprehensive structure with high fault-tolerant capability is one of the vital requirements and critical challenges. To tackle these issues, this study first presents and explores a new basic unit and staircase module (SM) and then extends and optimizes it to yield a reconfigurable multi-level inverter (MLI) with more levels and different goals. The proposed MLI can continue to operate when open-circuit faults in switches. This advantage of the proposed structure is achieved without any redundant legs or switches. For further investigation, a comparison is made in terms of the number of power switches, drivers, dc sources, and reliability between the proposed and similar structures. To control the output voltage levels, the strategy of fundamental frequency switching triggers the configured topology. The carrier signals are reconfigured under fault conditions based on levels to be generated by bypassing the faulted switch. The validity of the established MLI with its fault-tolerant capability is certified through both computer simulations using the MATLAB/Simulink platform and laboratory prototype implementations.

Mental rotation is a critically important, early developing spatial skill that is related to other spatial cognitive abilities. Understanding the early development of this skill, however, requires a developmentally appropriate assessment that can be used with infants, toddlers, and young children. We present here a new eye-tracking task that uses a staircase procedure to assess mental rotation in 12-, 24-, and 36-month-old children (N = 41). To ensure that all children understood the task, the session began with training and practice, in which the children learned to fixate which of two houses a giraffe, facing either left or right, would approach. The adaptive two-up, one-down staircase procedure assessed the children's ability to fixate the correct house when the giraffe was rotated in 30° (up) or 15° (down) increments. The procedure was successful, with most children showing evidence of mental rotation. In addition, the children were less likely to succeed as the angle of rotation increased, and the older children succeeded at higher angles of rotation than the younger children, replicating previous findings with other procedures. The present study contributes a new paradigm that can assess the development of mental rotation in young children and holds promise for yielding insights into individual differences in mental rotation.

OBJECTIVE: Novel self-healing resin-based composites containing microcapsules have been developed to improve the mechanical performance of dental restorations. However, the long-term fatigue behaviour of these self-healing composites has still been hardly investigated. Therefore, this manuscript studied the fatigue behaviour of self-healing composites containing microcapsules by subjecting the specimens to traditional staircase tests and ageing in a custom-designed chewing simulator (Rub&Roll) to simulate oral ageing physiologically relevant conditions. METHODS: To prepare self-healing composite, poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules containing acrylic self-healing liquids were synthesized. Subsequently, these microcapsules (10 wt%) and initiator (benzoyl peroxide, BPO, 2 wt%) were incorporated into a commercial flowable resin-based composite. Microcapsule-free resin-based composites with and without BPO were also prepared as control specimens. A three-point flexural test was used to measure the initial flexural strength (Sinitial). Subsequently, half of the specimens were used for fatigue testing using a common staircase approach to measure the fatigue strengths (FS). In addition, the other specimens were aged in the Rub&Roll machine for four weeks where after the final flexural strength (Sfinal) was measured. RESULTS: Compared to Sinitial, FS of all tested specimens significantly decreased as measured through staircase testing. After 4 weeks of ageing in the Rub&Roll machine, Sfinal was significantly reduced compared to Sinitial for microcapsule-free resin-based composites, but not for the self-healing composites (p = 0.3658). However, the self-healing composites are still in the experimental phase characterized by a low mechanical strength, which still impedes further clinical translation. SIGNIFICANCE: Self-healing composites containing microcapsules exhibit improved fatigue resistance compared to microcapsule-free non-self-healing composites.

BACKGROUND: Touch is a crucial sense for perceiving the spatial characteristics of objects. The JVP dome was developed to evaluate tactile spatial acuity using a grating orientation task. There were few studies depicting sequences and details for the entire task, including practice, training, and testing sessions. Therefore, we proposed and elaborated a protocol for the grating orientation task using the staircase method, which required fewer testing trials compared with the method of constant stimuli. METHODS: Twenty-three healthy participants were enrolled in this experiment. The JVP domes with 11 different groove widths were used. Tactile discrimination thresholds were estimated using a two-down-one-up staircase method. The experiment comprised practice, training, and testing sessions, conducted by trained examiners who performed grating stimulation on participants' index fingerpads. RESULTS: All participants passed the required accuracy in the practice and training sessions. Eight transition points were obtained in the testing session for each participant. The tactile discrimination thresholds were determined from the last six transition points. We obtained the mean tactile discrimination threshold as 1.8 ± 0.75 mm (n = 23). The results demonstrated that the proposed protocol was successfully applied to assess tactile discrimination thresholds. CONCLUSIONS: The present study investigated the protocol of grating orientation tasks requiring a small number of testing trials with the assurance of the task quality. The feasibility study and preliminary results indicated the potentiality of this protocol for future clinical application.

Walking in real-world environments involves constant decision-making, e.g., when approaching a staircase, an individual decides whether to engage (climbing the stairs) or avoid. For the control of assistive robots (e.g., robotic lower-limb prostheses), recognizing such motion intent is an important but challenging task, primarily due to the lack of available information. This paper presents a novel vision-based method to recognize an individual's motion intent when approaching a staircase before the potential transition of motion mode (walking to stair climbing) occurs. Leveraging the egocentric images from a head-mounted camera, the authors trained a YOLOv5 object detection model to detect staircases. Subsequently, an AdaBoost and gradient boost (GB) classifier was developed to recognize the individual's intention of engaging or avoiding the upcoming stairway. This novel method has been demonstrated to provide reliable (97.69%) recognition at least 2 steps before the potential mode transition, which is expected to provide ample time for the controller mode transition in an assistive robot in real-world use.

Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) scan provides a detailed stimulus-response curve for examination of neuromuscular disease. The objective of the study is to develop a novel CMAP scan analysis to extract motor unit number estimation (MUNE) and other physiological or diagnostic information. A staircase function was used as the basic mathematical model of the CMAP scan. An optimal staircase function fitting model was estimated for each given number of motor units, and the fitting model with the minimum number of motor units that meets a predefined error requirement was accepted. This yields MUNE as well as the spike amplitude and activation threshold of each motor unit that contributes to the CMAP scan. The significance of the staircase function fit was confirmed using simulated CMAP scans with different motor unit number (20, 50, 100 and 150) and baseline noise (1 µV, 5 µV and 10 µV) inputs, in terms of MUNE performance, repeatability, and the test-retest reliability. For experimental data, the average MUNE of the first dorsal interosseous muscle derived from the staircase function fitting was 57.5 ± 26.9 for the tested spinal cord injury subjects, which was significantly lower than 101.2 ± 16.9, derived from the control group (p < 0.001). The staircase function fitting provides an appropriate approach to CMAP scan processing, yielding MUNE and other useful parameters for examination of motor unit loss and muscle fiber reinnervation.

RESUMO

In this study, we propose and simulate the design of a non-regrowth staircase channel GaN vertical trench transistor, demonstrating an exceptional threshold and breakdown characteristic for high power and high frequency applications. The unique staircase design provides a variable capacitance through the gate-dielectric-semiconductor interface, which results in a high breakdown voltage of 1.52 kV and maintains a channel on-resistance of 2.61 mΩ∙cm2. Because of the variable length and doping profile in the channel region, this model offers greater flexibility to meet a wide range of device application requirements.

One of the most precise methods to establish psychometric functions and estimate threshold and slope parameters is the constant stimuli procedure. The large distribution of predetermined stimulus values presented to observers enables the psychometric functions to be fully developed, but makes this procedure time-consuming. Adaptive procedures enable reliable threshold estimation while reducing the number of trials by concentrating stimulus presentations around observers' supposed threshold. Here, the stimulus value for the next trial depends on observer's responses to the previous trials. One recent improvement of these procedures is to also estimate the slope (related to discrimination sensitivity). The Bayesian QUEST+ procedure (Watson Journal of Vision, 17(3), 10, 2017), a generalization and extension of the QUEST procedure, includes this refinement. Surprisingly, this procedure is barely used. Our goal was to empirically assess its precision to evaluate size, orientation, or temporal perception, in three yes/no discrimination tasks that increase in demands. In 72 adult participants in total, we compared points of subjective equivalence (PSEs) or simultaneity (PSSs) as well as discrimination sensitivity obtained with the QUEST+, constant stimuli, and simple up-down staircase procedures. While PSEs did not differ between procedures, sensitivity estimates obtained with the 64-trials QUEST+ procedure were overestimated (i.e., just-noticeable differences, or JNDs, were underestimated). Overall, agreement between procedures was good, and was at its best for the easiest tasks. This study empirically confirmed that the QUEST+ procedure can be considered as a method of choice to accelerate PSE estimation, while keeping in mind that sensitivity estimation should be handled with caution.

The validity of widely used rodent behavioural tests of anxiety has been questioned, as they often fail to produce consistent results across independent replicate studies. In this study, we assessed the sensitivity of common behavioural tests of anxiety in mice to detect anxiolytic effects of drugs prescribed to treat anxiety in humans. We conducted a pre-registered systematic review of 814 studies reporting effects of 25 anxiolytic compounds using common behavioural tests for anxiety. Meta-analyses of effect sizes of treatments showed that only two out of 17 commonly used test measures reliably detected effects of anxiolytic compounds. We report considerable between-study variation in size and even direction of effects of most anxiolytics on most outcome variables. Our findings indicate a general lack of sensitivity of those behavioural tests and cast serious doubt on both construct and predictive validity of most of these tests. In view of scientifically valid and ethically responsible research, we call for a revision of behavioural tests of anxiety in mice and the development of more predictive tests.

The minimum audible angle (MAA), defined as the smallest detectable difference between the azimuths of two identical sources of sound, is a standard measure of spatial auditory acuity in animals. Few studies have explored the MAA of dogs, using methods that do not allow potential improvement throughout the assessment, and with a very small number of dog(s) assessed. To overcome these limits, we adopted a staircase method on 10 dogs, using a two-forced choice procedure with two sound sources, testing angles of separation from 60° to 1°. The staircase method permits the level of difficulty for each dog to be continuously adapted and allows for the observation of improvement over time. The dogs' average MAA was 7.6°, although with a large interindividual variability, ranging from 1.3° to 13.2°. A global improvement was observed across the procedure, substantiated by a gradual lowering of the MAA and of choice latency across sessions. The results indicate that the staircase method is feasible and reliable in the assessment of auditory spatial localization in dogs, highlighting the importance of using an appropriate method in a sensory discrimination task, so as to allow improvement over time. The results also reveal that the MAA of dogs is more variable than previously reported, potentially reaching values lower than 2°. Although no clear patterns of association emerged between MAA and dogs' characteristics such as ear shape, head shape or age, the results suggest the value of conducting larger-scale studies to determine whether these or other factors influence sound localization abilities in dogs.

RESUMO

Collision (or impact) of single palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) on gold (Au), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and platinum (Pt) ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) were investigated via electrocatalytic amplification method. Unlike the blip responses of previous Pd NP collision studies, the staircase current response was obtained with the Au UME. The current response, including collision frequency and peak magnitude, was analyzed depending on the material of the UME and the applied potential. Adsorption factors implying the interaction between the Pd NP and the UMEs are suggested based on the experimental results.
